Printing

In the hackerspace there is a network-connected laser printer. Please be conscientious and do not print unnecessarily.

  • Location: Hackerspace (to the right of the large cabinet)
  • IP Address: 192.168.1.12
  • Model: HP LaserJet 4050

There are several ways to connect to the printer. The simplest is to allow CUPS to handle everything for you. If you are using a modern Linux OS, this will likely already be installed.

To install the printer using a GUI, navigate to your printer settings (or run the command system-config-printer). You will hopefully see a screen that looks like the following:

Click 'add' and then 'Network Printer'. After a short while, an entry below 'Network Printer' should appear with the name of the printer (HP LaserJet 4050). If not, try clicking 'Find Network Printer' and enter the IP Address.

Once you have a printer selected, click 'Forward'. CUPS will search for the drivers. Once it has found the drivers, it'll prompt you to provide a name for the printer. The defaults are fine, or you can choose something else; be creative! Click apply and you should be done! You should now be able to print from this device in any application.

In order to use the printer on Windows, you will need to install a driver. The driver can be found on our fileserver, in the directory /public/drivers/hp-laserjet-4050-printer-series. Copy this executable to your desktop (or some other folder) and run it.

TODO: Finish this (need a windows laptop still).
