Garbage/Rubbish/trash/Müll

Waste dictionary:

  • Compost bin: a bowl for compostables that are not suitable for chickens & ducks - citrus, onions avocado etc.
  • Non-recyclabe bin: please take non compostables directly to the black bin on the other side of the street
  • Chicken/duck food: a bowl for compostables that are suitable for chickens & ducks - vegetable waste, surplus cooked food, leftover bread etc. This is usually near the kitchen sink.
  • Compost piles: Positioned at different locations around the property, at present 2 exist in the mandala garden and 6 in the yard. Compost piles are labelled with what can go in them - if they are not they should be labelled!

Biodegradable items go firstly into the small WHITE BOWL next to the bread bin. Every morning empty it into the COMPOST heap, (turn left out of the kitchen, go through the gate and turn right) empty it and return it. .

Bin Dates

Non recyclable items straight into the black bin outside across the street.

The black bin gets collected every other Tuesday morning

Bin Dates

Recyclable items with the recycle logo go into the yellow wheelie bin, things like milk cartons cereal boxes and these should be flattened/crushed before storing.

Currently there are 2 places inside the house for yellow bin items, one in the pantry behind the door (blue bag) and one in the bar on the right side of the front door (blue bag). Both these bags should be emptied daily.

The Yellow bin gets collected every other Monday morning

Bin Dates

This wheelie bin is for paper items that DO NOT have the recycle logo on them, they should be flattened/crushed before storing.

Cardboard boxes that are not coated with plastic should be stored in the ground floor of the old mill (on the yard side) to be used for mulching.

The blue bin is taken on a different schedule and you will be informed if this needs to be moved

Bottles (glass/plastic) eg beer/wine go firstly into the bar in the metal cage box once this becomes full they will need to be taken in the car to the bottle bank/depot.

We collect and reuse:

  • jars
    • first clean them in the dishwasher
    • then they be placed in the pantry in lieu of the cellar renovation being finished
  • small stable plastic buckets
  • good containers
    • tobacco cans, cigar boxes, …
    • when they are tainted by machine oil or something similar, we don't want to use them
    • the bigger the better
    • a bad example is the cheap plastic containers for vegetables like carrots - these break very easily and often create more hassle.
    • If you have an idea to reuse something just ask and we'll probably be fine with it. We want to reuse as much as possible but we have to value that against the time taken.
